If she could get to her aunt's village she was sure she'd be safe. Unfortunately for Solie, the king's guards catch her and take her to be sacrificed.     Sacrifice is nasty. Women die. In return, a king's favourite gets a Battle Sylph, bound to them and forced to obey their every whim. What does the Battler offer in return? Rage. Rage, and anger, and a willingness to annihilate any enemy his owner points him at.     Fortunately for Solie, she's able to avoid the sacrificial knife by using one of her own, which leaves Solie with a Battle Sylph accidentally bound to her, and the full resources of the kingdom chasing the two of them. Just as well the Battler can fly. And protect her. Mostly.     Their flight from soldiers and other Battle Sylphs makes for a hair raising ride, as Solie and the Battler try to figure out what's happening, and where they can go for safety.     This is a seriously clever new world from a seriously clever new writer. Neither the front cover, nor the blurb on the back, is particularly smart [in fact the cover sucks!], but don't let it put you off: this book is an absolute keeper.     When I finished Battle Sylph I was strongly reminded of the first Anne McCaffrey Dragonrider story I read. I finished that thinking I WANT one of those dragons [and have been collecting winged dragons ever since]. Battle Sylphs and dragons are very different, but they are both strong, protective and fierce. I finished this story with the exact same fierce wish: I WANT one of those Battle Sylphs.     By The Way: the second Sylph story is equally good.
